Language Experience Teaching Method
With this method parents use the words their children already know to teach them how to read. This is quite the opposite of the Phonetics Learning Method.
The concept is based on having children draw any picture they want. After they draw it, the parent would then ask the child what the picture is about. After hearing the responses, the parent should then write a sentence under the drawing.
So if a child would draw a picture of a cat on a rug, and then describe it as "kitty on the rug", you could write "Kitty, the cat on the rug."
The process is repeated until the parent has a collection of pictures with sentences which can be united into a small "book". The child will then read the book. This whole process creates communication between parent and child and encourages bonding.
As more and more drawings are made, children will eventually write a word and latter on sentences of what they are drawing. This technique is many times used as a first approach to reading and helps children understand what they are drawing.
This teaching method builds children's logic, intelligence, independence and auto-esteem. It also exercises children's vocabulary and the artistic part of their mind.
