Phonetics Learning Method

Phonetics is probably the best known and most commonly used technique to teach reading and writing. The idea is to breakdown language and teach it from the smallest building blocks up.

The first step is to teach the alphabet. Children learn the letters and the sounds they can make. Once they know that, they can then put two letters together to make simple words, then 3, 4 and so forth.

The rhythm of learning can be quite fast. Up to one word a day can be learned by children, although parents shouldn't get discouraged if it takes up to a week to learn the first couple of letters. Once a child starts to get the rhythm of it, they will learn fast.

To teach phonetics, a phonically written book must be used. The books should always be on a topic of interest for the particular child.

Learning sounds and their blends may be boring for young children, so parents should keep their lessons short and interesting.

Children may not understand what they are reading since they can be so caught up in the activity of reading. So parents should remember to explain the meaning of what they are reading to their children.

This method is similar to The Card Teaching Technique.
